MasterCard promotion increases shopping frequency and annual spend [Case Study]


MasterCard operates the world’s fastest payment processing network, connecting consumers, financial institutions, merchants, governments and businesses in more than 210 countries and territories.



MasterCard was looking for creative ways to give cardholders additional value for using their MasterCard more frequently. With the holiday shopping season less than 90 days away, the team at MasterCard aimed to launch a promotion that gives cardholders free 2-day shipping at a specific group of retailers for a limited time.


Getting the desired retailers to participate in the promotion posed a challenge, but with Clarus’ retail experience and existing relationships we were able to source the retailers MasterCard desired to be part of their promotion. The 2-day free shipping promotion launched in time for the holiday shopping season with the chosen 40 retailers participating.

The program was designed in a way that allowed every MasterCard cardholder to take advantage of the free promotion just by signing up. They’d then shop directly with retailers and a credit was placed back on the member’s MasterCard for up to $20 per 2-day shipping charge at 10 retailers. All members had the option to upgrade to the paid version for access to an additional 30 retailers.

MasterCard’s goals for the promotion were to get cardholders shopping more often and spending more. During Q4, year-over-year member spend was 18% higher than the rest of the sample and members were making 2-5 additional purchases. MasterCard positively impacted its cardholders with a promotion that launched quickly, was easy to use, and provided unique, timely value.
